Community, legislators helped save Independent Living Centers

Posted: Tuesday, June 17, 2003

All of us at the Independent Living Center want to express our heartfelt thanks for the community support exhibited in the recent state budget deliberations.

In January, we learned the governor intended to eliminate state Centers for Independent Living Grants from the 2004 budget. The response from our consumers and from the community at large was a barrage of letters, e-mails and telephone calls to the governor's office. When it became clear the governor and his commissioner of labor were not swayed by this overwhelming show of support, all of us took the fight to the state Legislature.

Because of the hard work of our supporters and the help of courageous representatives and senators like Paul Seaton and Gary Stevens, both the House and Senate recommended the restoration of the grants that allow us to provide valuable service to the state and our communities. Our efforts and those of our supporters were rewarded on Friday, June 13, when the final 2004 budget was released. The budget includes full funding for Center's for Independent Living. You should all be proud of a job well done.

Thank you.
