ANCHORAGE (AP) -- Police have arrested two people in the beating death of a woman outside a north Anchorage apartment building earlier this month, authorities said Monday.

Franklin Singsahanath, 20, was charged with second-degree murder in the death of Caroline Merculief, a 25-year-old St. Paul Island woman who died of head injuries June 10. Singsahanath was being held at the Cook Inlet Pre-Trial Facility on $100,000 bail.

Police also arrested a 16-year-old girl and charged her with manslaughter. Her name was not released because she is a juvenile. She was being held at the McLaughlin Youth Center.

Merculief had a history of substance abuse and mental illness, and recently had been released from jail, police said. She was living in a supervised apartment close to a treatment center and appeared to be making progress.

The night she died she had been visiting a friend at her old apartment and they joined a party in a downstairs unit. Police said Merculief was beaten to death when a fight broke out after the party ended.
