Clarion looking for barbecuers

The Clarion is looking for local barbecue enthusiasts interested in sharing tips, tricks and recipes for a summer barbecuing story. If you love to grill, we’d love to grill you about your pastime. Anyone interested can submit their name and phone number to us by e-mail at news@peninsulaclarion.com, by phone at 283-7551, fax at 283-3299 or drop it off at our Kenai office by June 28.

Smolt ID workshop set

The Kenai Watershed Forum has arranged for a weir tour at the Bear Creek Weir outside Seward from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Cathy Cline, a technician at the weir, will lead up to 15 people on an interactive tour on how to identify sockeye and coho smolt. A picnic lunch will follow.

Kenai swim times scheduled

Kenai pool swim lesson sign-ups will be between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday for the second session, which runs from June 20-23.

Lap swim is from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m., Monday through Friday; swim workout is from 8 to 9 a.m., Monday, Wednesday and Friday; and open swim is from 1 to 2:45 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Quilting on the Kenai coming up

The 12th annual Quilting on the Kenai event will be held later this week. The event includes the quilt show, open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Cook Inlet Academy on Kalifornsky Beach Road; a wearable art fashion show at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Peninsula Grace Brethren Church on K-Beach Road; a quilt walk at area businesses Thursday, Friday and Saturday where visitors can view quilts and enter to win a drawing for prizes; and various demonstrations, lectures and classes offered by local and special guest instructors Stephanie Kimura and JoAnn Belling.

Sterling seniors cook up good time

The Sterling Senior Center will hold its 16th annual barbecue from 4 to 8 p.m. June 24. Ribs and chicken, salads, baked beans, garlic bread, beverages and desserts will be served. There also will be door prizes. The cost is $12.50 for adults and $5 for kids 3 to 12.

Red Cross golf tourney set

The American Red Cross will host it 15th annual Golf Classic on July 8 at Birch Ridge Golf Course in Soldotna. For more information, call 283-4556.
