Oilers drop finale: Monarchs storm back with 6-run 8th

Posted: Thursday, June 18, 2009

The Lake Erie Monarchs used a six-run eighth inning to defeat the Peninsula Oilers 8-5 on Wednesday in nonleague action at Coral Seymour Memorial Park in Kenai.

The Monarchs improved to 3-4 on their trip to Alaska, while the Oilers had a three-game winning streak snapped and stand at 3-2 overall.

Peninsula opens its Alaska Baseball League schedule on Friday in Anchorage with a 7 p.m. game against the Glacier Pilots.

The Oilers appeared set to take some momentum into that game, holding a 5-1 lead heading into the eighth.

The Monarchs immediately went to work against reliever and eventual loser Jacob Anderson, loading the bases with no outs.

Anderson appeared to have an opening to get out of the inning with minimal damage when Zach Dygert hit into a double play, scoring one run.

However, the Monarchs quickly loaded the bases again. Matt Dittman then hit a slow roller to second base that he beat out for a single to score a run.

Josh Corrales then came on in relief of Anderson, but failed to remove the Monarchs from the punch bowl. The big blow was a two-RBI double by Patrick Martin to make the score 7-5.

For good measure, Dygert tacked on the first home run of the year at Coral Seymour Memorial Park in the ninth inning.

The Oilers came out early determined to sweep the series from the Monarchs. In the bottom of the first, Stephen Hagen singled to score Michael Miller.

In the bottom of the third, Shayne Willson tripled to right field and scored on a Jonathan Kaskow ground out for a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Oilers padded their lead to 6-1 when Jake Johnson hit a sacrifice fly to score Hagen, Miller hit a single to score Ryan Fisher and Chris Ellison walked to force in a run.

The Oilers picked up a solid start from Kyle Barraclough, as he went five scoreless innings and gave up just two hits. Crosby Slaught gave up one run in one inning of relief.

Miller had three hits for the Oilers, while Willson and Mark Tracy each had two hits.

For the Monarchs, Dittman had four hits, while Dygert and Kevin Gillespie each had two hits.

Matt Kuna threw two hitless, scoreless innings of relief to notch the win for the Monarchs.
