Search for missing cannery worker suspended

JUNEAU (AP) -- The search for a missing cannery worker has been suspended, Alaska State Troopers said.

Juneau resident William Unick, 48, walked away from the Ward Cove Packing plant at Excursion Inlet on Friday and was reported missing by his wife.

The search was called off Sunday evening, Alaska State Trooper Cpl. Chuck Lamica.

''He was very ill when he disappeared,'' Lamica said. Searchers found nothing, though there was indication that a snow-melt swollen river may have been involved with Unick's disappearance.

''We did have a couple of search dogs have a great deal of interest in a river ... about 150 yards away from where he was last seen,'' Lamica said.

Workers at the cannery 38 miles west of Juneau plan to continue looking for Unick as time and other work allow, Lamica said.
