Rice, Stanford notch World Series victories

Posted: Thursday, June 19, 2003

OMAHA, Neb. Justin Ruchti's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning gave Rice a 5-4 victory over Texas on Wednesday night and sent the Owls to the College World Series championship round.

Stanford 5, Cal State Fullerton 3

OMAHA, Neb. Carlos Quentin homered twice and drove in three runs as Stanford staved off elimination and defeated Cal State Fullerton.

John Hudgins turned in a second straight strong pitching performance, allowing five hits but only one after the third inning in a complete game. Hudgins (13-3), pitching on four days' rest, gave up two hits in eight innings of Stanford's 8-0 win over South Carolina in its CWS opener last Friday.

The victory Stanford's first in five games this season against the Titans forces a rematch Thursday to determine which team will take on Rice in the championship round.

Quentin, hitting .500 (7-for-14) in the CWS, hit a two-run homer in the first inning to open the scoring for the Cardinal (49-16), and hit a solo shot in the eighth.

P.J. Pilittere hit a solo homer for Cal State Fullerton (50-15).
