Hooked on Fishing says thanks

Posted: Monday, June 19, 2006

On June 10 at the Kenai River Festival, we had the pleasure through the Hooked on Fishing program of giving 150 rods and reels to local boys and girls. In its fifth year, the program is a joint effort between Kenai River Sportfishing Association and the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Kenai Peninsula.

Through the volunteer efforts of Dennis Gease, Don McKay, Bill Wirin, Jim Bennett, Ron Rainey, Alan and Billie Jean Phillips and myself, we were able to gather together donated rods and reels, some old and some new. We cleaned and refinished the used rods and reels, mingled them with the new ones and presented them to children between the ages of 6 and 16. Nick Whitaker and Zack Reser, two fine Young Marines, assisted us at the festival.

I want to thank all those anglers who donated their used equipment to the program. None of this is possible without the donations and gifts of rods, reels and money from members of our community. With continued growth and support, we hope to be able to increase the number of rods and reels for our 2007 program.

Many kids walked away with a fishing pole in their hand and a smile on their face. For those whom we unfortunately missed, we’ll continue our efforts and we will see you next year. Thanks again for making Hooked of Fishing a great success.
