BARROW (AP) -- A Barrow man was killed when he lost control of the four-wheeler he was driving and was thrown from the machine, North Slope Borough Police said.
Thomas Kanayurak Jr. was driving the four-wheeler in Barrow early Sunday when he failed to turn away from a utility abutment at Apayauk and Pisokak streets. The machine broke through the abutment and struck a fire hydrant. Police said the machine was traveling at a high rate of speed.
Kanayurak and two passengers were thrown from the machine.
Kanayurak was taken to Samuel Simmonds Memorial Hospital where he died about an hour after the accident. One of his passengers, John Long, 18, also was taken to the hospital but hospital officials had no information on him Monday. A third person, a 16-year-old, was not injured.
Police said drugs and alcohol appear to have been factors.
