Thunderbirds take pair from Post 20

The American Legion Post 20 Twins were swept by East Sunday in Anchorage.

The Twins lost a lead late in the contest to drop game one 4-2, then were thoroughly trounced in getting dismissed in the second game 13-0.

Twins manager Lance Coz said the team was really focusing on getting the first game from East, which won the high school state championship earlier this spring. The Twins had already played two games Saturday and were short on experienced pitchers Sunday because their No. 4 starter left the team to take a summer job.

The Twins, on runs by Paul John Zobeck and Severin Gardner, had a 2-0 lead through the top of the sixth. The Thunderbirds got to Post 20 starter Danny Bookey for an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth, then mounted the game-winning rally in the bottom of the seventh inning. East got to Bookey for two runs in the seventh, then added another off reliever Joey Newby in the eighth inning.

Mike Sauer and Eric Newby were each 2-for-4 for the Twins in the first game.

"We just missed out on good opportunities in that first game," Coz said. "When you have those opportunities, you have to take advantage of them.

"In the (seventh) inning, we had the bases loaded with one out and didn't get any runs. The first run against Bookey was unearned. We'll go back and work on those things."

In the second game, Shaun Williams, still nursing a sore shoulder from basketball camp, had a rough outing on the mound. The Twins defense also committed three errors and didn't back him up very well. East had a 13-0 lead after three innings and the game was stopped due to the mercy rule after 4 1-2 frames.

Post 20 will return home to face the South Peninsula Storm Wednesday in a pair of seven-inning games. The action starts at 3 p.m.
