Peninsula rips three long balls to complete two-game sweep of Anchorage

Oilers turn Baum bats into bomb bats

Posted: Wednesday, June 20, 2001

The Peninsula Oilers slugged three home runs Tuesday night as they defeated the Anchorage Bucs 8-1 in Alaska Baseball League play at Coral Seymour Memorial Park.

The combination of Seymour Park's spacious outfield and the composite Baum bats the ABL players use is usually enough to keep balls in the ballpark.

Before Tuesday's game, the Oilers had played 12 games at Seymour Park and had yet to hit a home run. The Oilers' only dinger came in an exhibition game against the American Legion Post 20 Peninsula Twins.

However, Wilton Reynolds and Jamie D'Antona weren't fazed by the challenges of power hitting in Seymour Park Tuesday.

Reynolds, the leadoff hitter, connected on a pair of two-run home runs. The first came in the fourth inning while the second came in the eighth inning.

After Mark Teahen flied out, D'Antona followed up Reynolds' eighth-inning blast with a shot to left of his own.

Reynolds, a 6-foot-4 outfielder from Oral Roberts University, finished up the evening 3-for-5 with three runs and four RBIs.

After cutting down two runners at the plate in the Oilers' 11-inning victory over the Bucs Monday, it's safe to say Reynolds played a huge role in the two-game sweep of Anchorage. The sweep left the Oilers at 3-2 in the ABL and over .500 in the league for the first time this season.

Teahen and D'Antona also had good evenings at the plate for Peninsula, as each collected two hits in the Oilers' 12-hit attack.

The power outburst almost overshadowed something that is a little more common at Seymour Park -- a masterful pitching performance.

Oilers starter Nelson Lopez went all nine innings and gave up one run on five hits to boost his record to 2-0 on the year. The right-hander now has a microscopic ERA of 0.43.

The Oilers started giving Lopez runs in the first innings. Reynolds singled, advanced to second when Bucs started and loser Nick Gravelle balked, then scored on a double by Teahen.

Peninsula tacked another run onto the lead in the third inning when Teahen singled with one out, then eventually scored on a two-out single by Creighton Kahoalii.

The Oilers pushed the lead to 4-0 on Reynolds' home run in the fourth, then Gravelle chased himself in the bottom of the fifth when he was ejected for arguing balls and strikes.

Peninsula touched up Bucs reliever Ricky Bostick for a run in the seventh when Luke Simmons doubled with one out, then eventually scored on a two-out single by Matt Cunningham.

The Bucs finally got to Lopez for a run in the top of the eighth, but the bombs of Reynolds and D'Antona put the game away in the bottom of the eighth.

The Oilers will take today off before opening a four-game set with the Mat-Su Miners on Thursday at Coral Seymour Memorial Park. Game time is at 7 p.m.
