Woods four shots off pace at Buick Classic

HARRISON, N.Y. Briny Baird had an 8-under 63, one stroke off the course record, and held a three-shot lead over U.S. Open champion Jim Furyk and Joey Sindelar after the first round of the Buick Classic on Thursday.

Tiger Woods, Retief Goosen and Shigeki Maruyama had 67s at the soggy Westchester Country Club. Ernie Els, Deane Pappas, J.L. Lewis and Skip Kendall were another stroke back. Sergio Garcia, the 2001 winner, shot a 70, eagling the par-5 ninth to cap a wild round that included two double-bogeys, three bogeys and six birdies.

GLENEAGLES, Scotland Alastair Forsyth, Brad Kennedy and Marc Warren shot 2-under 70s and were tied for the lead after a windy first round of the Diageo Championship. Ivo Giner, Gustavo Rojas and Iain Pyman were one stroke back, while defending champion Adam Scott and Colin Montgomerie had 72s at the PGA Centenary Course at Gleneagles.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. Tina Barrett, whose only tour victory came in her rookie year in 1989, birdied the last three holes for a 5-under 67 that gave her a one-stroke lead after the opening round of the Rochester LPGA.

Anna-Jane Eathorne was second, while nine golfers, including defending champion Karrie Webb, had 69s at the tree-lined Locust Hill course. Also in the group at 69 was Mi Hyun Kim.

PALM COAST, Fla. Stroke-play medalist Virada Nirapathpongporn, defending champion Annie Thurman and 13-year-old Michelle Wie won first-round matches in the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Champion-ship.

Nirapathpongporn, a rising senior at Duke, was 2 down after three holes to 64th-seeded Carling Cho of San Juan Capistrano, Calif., but rallied to win 3 and 2 at the Ocean Hammock Golf Club.

Thurman, an incoming junior at Oklahoma State and last year's Public Links champion, defeated Courtney Mahon of Topeka, Kan., 2 and 1.

Wie, of Honolulu, beat Jane Rah of Torrance, Calif., 2 and 1.
