Honer, Rooper win five-miler

Tommy Honer and Laura Rooper were the winners at the five-mile Run in the Midnight Sun on Saturday in Nikiski.

Honer finished the course in 30 minutes, 35 seconds, to defeat runner-up Kent Peterson by four seconds. Rooper finished in 39:20 to top runner-up Maya Johnson, who crossed the finish line at 41:33.

Twins go 2-2 on trip

The American Legion Twins went 2-2 on a trip to Anchorage on Saturday and Sunday, first splitting with Service then splitting with West.

In Saturday’s first game against Service, the Twins defeated the Cougars 13-0 in a game that was called after seven innings due to the mercy rule.

Kevin Epperheimer and Shaun Isaacs combined on the shutout. Epperheimer pitched four innings and gave up four hits while striking out five, while Isaacs pitched three innings and struck out three while yielding one hit.

On offense, Luke Oliver, Jacob Lamphier, Ethan Waters and Isaacs all had two hits for the Twins. Lamphier and Ethan Waters each had two RBIs, while Oliver, Epperheimer, Jordan Waters and Ethan Waters scored two runs.

In the second game, Service had a seven-run fifth inning to claim an 8-6 victory. Twins pitchers did not give up an earned run in the game.

Steven Mabeus had two hits and two runs for the Twins, while Epperheimer had two hits and Oliver had two runs.

In Sunday’s first game, the Twins defeated West 20-5 in seven innings in a game that was shortened due to the mercy rule.

Lamphier pitched five innings and gave up seven hits and one unearned run, while Daniel Hepner finished up by giving up four runs (three earned) in two innings.

On offense, Oliver had three runs, three hits and three RBIs, Isaacs had two hits and two runs, Epperheimer had three hits and two runs, Lamphier had two hits and two runs, Tyler Chappell had three runs, two hits and two runs and Hepner had three runs and two hits.

The Twins had more trouble scoring in the second game, losing 2-1. Mabeus pitched six scoreless innings, while Ben Stalker gave up two runs in the sixth inning to take the loss. Oliver had the lone hit for the Twins.

Starting Wednesday, the Twins will play in the 35th Annual Firecracker Baseball Tournament in DeLand, Florida. The tournament games will be audiocast over the Internet at www.floridacast.com. The Twins first game will be against DeLand on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ADT.
