Monarchs avoid Oilers sweep

Lake Erie catcher hits game-winning homer, plays great defense

Posted: Tuesday, June 20, 2006

The Lake Erie Monarchs avoided a sweep by defeating the Peninsula Oilers 4-3 on Monday at Coral Seymour Memorial Park in Kenai.

The Oilers finished their season-opening 11-game homestand with an 8-3 record. The team will open its Alaska Baseball League season on Wednesday with a 7 p.m. game at the Mat-Su Miners.

Monarchs catcher Erich Diedrich put on a stellar performance at the plate and behind the plate.

At the plate, Diedrich had a double, a home run and three RBIs. His two-run shot to the power alley in right center came with the game tied at 2 and made a loser out of Oilers reliever David Miller.

Diedrich also single-handedly prevented a disastrous inning for the Monarchs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Oilers leadoff batter Chris Nelson started the inning with a single, but was cut down trying to steal by Kendzicky. Austin Yount then reached first on a throwing error by the second baseman, but Diedrich backed up the play and threw out Yount when he tried to advance to second on the bad throw.

Diedrich then completed the remarkable inning when Brian Van Kirk walked and was thrown out trying to steal second.

The Oilers tried to battle back in the late innings against reliever and winner Adam Gumpf.

In the eighth inning, Van Kirk tripled and Soldotna High School graduate David Newby singled to collect his team-leading 13th RBI of the year and make the score 4-3.

In the ninth, Kip Masuda had his second hit of the game with two outs, but Ryan Mottern struck out to end the game.
