Sterling resident Bernard P. Strahmann died Sunday, June 15, 2008, in Shreveport, La., after a lengthy illness. He was 72.
A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. today, Friday, June 20, at Mt. Redoubt Church in Nikiski on the Kenai Spur Highway. Pastor Moore will officiate.
Mr. Strahmann was born June 20, 1935, in Larabee, Iowa, to Mary and William Strahmann.
"He loved to work in his garden and once won Yard of the Month around the log home he and his family built themselves. He was an avid reader, who especially loved westerns. Bernie also loved to tell stories, as well as travel. He was a founding member of the Elks and Eagle Lodges and a member of the Moose Lodge. But most of all he was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather," his family said.
Mr. Strahmann was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Bill; and son, Eddie Strahmann.
He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Nina Strahmann; sons, Vince Strahmann, Art Edelen, Rob Edelen and Shane Derflinger; daughter, Cindy Strahmann; grandsons ("Papa's buds"), Mason Welmers, Jerome Welmers, James Edelen, Steven Stewart and Wyatt Stewart; granddaughters ("Papa's chicks"), Brook Bernier, Azure Dominguez, Christina, Jessica, Heather, Tatian and Madelyn Edelen, Jaylee Stewart and Dallas, Aurora and Darrion Derflinger; and great-grandchildren, Nicole and Emily Bernier and "Papa's Kaite" Sterling.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to the Bernard Strahmann Scholarship Fund for Kenai Alternative High School at USA Federal Credit Union or P.O. Box 1253, Kenai AK 99611.
