Annual grouch contest names newest winner

Posted: Wednesday, June 21, 2000

Bob Summers has a right to be grouchy.

The Nikiski resident won this year's Grouch Contest at the Family Fun in the Midnight Sun event in Nikiski on Saturday.

Summers was a candidate for the Cook Inlet Lions Club and edged out fellow competitors Jackie Waldrip and Steve Holloway, also Nikiski residents. Waldrip was the candidate for the Moose Lodge and Holloway represented KSRM radio.

Voters had to pay a quarter to have their say, but the amount of money raised hasn't been totaled yet. However, Lions member Diana Summers, who also is Bob's wife, said it will definitely be put to good use.

"They raised enough to buy several pairs of eyeglasses or help with eye surgery or even buy film for a special camera that takes photos of children's eyes to detect problems."

So, is Bob Summers really a grouch?

"He can pretend to be," said Diana. "And sometimes he really is -- especially if he's not catching fish."
