Jeff Short, a research chemist with the National Marine Fisheries Service, displays an oil-coated rock on the shore of Knight Island in Alaska's Prince William Sound recently.

The fisheries service is conducting a summer-long survey of the sound's shoreline to determine the long-term effects of the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill.
