Greetings from Cohoe once again.
It's Amanda Chesley again and I am pleased to be filling in for Shawna while she enjoys a bit of family time. I hope everyone enjoyed Father's Day and got their week off to a pleasant start.
It must be full-blown summer now, for I'm hearing the constant buzz of beetle killed tree eradication equipment. Spruce bark beetles continue to live in downed trees. Remember to remove and destroy the bark when feasible.
A neighbor informed me she had two separate sightings of bears this past week just a couple of miles apart. She thought they were young black bears. She encountered them in broad daylight while walking along the road.
With the salmon in the rivers and the vegetation ripening bears are on the move and eating constantly.
To learn more about the proper way to protect your property and have a bear safe neighborhood, call Larry Lewis or Jeff Selinger of Fish and Game at 262-9368. They would be happy to come give a community talk.
On another note, some Kasilof Girl Scouts participated in the a survivor summer camp at Scout Lake in Sterling. The girls said they enjoyed two days of outdoor fun, learning, making tie-dyed T-shirts, bird houses and first aid kits, as well as making friends.
In addition to making crafts, they had an introduction to water safety, canoeing, knot tying and hiking. Traditional songs and games also were played.
It is my understanding that some area Boy Scouts donated their time and talents to this event. So, kudos to them, as well as the other volunteers who made camp possible.
Anyone interested in getting their daughters involved in Girl Scouts can call me at 262-6750 or e-mail me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
