Many Funny River residents, including Daniel Smith, Sissy Bird, Corky Moore, Robert Partin and Larry and Dianne Hamilton, have helped a homesteader's golf dream come true.
The greens at Pat and Elmer's Bird Homestead Golf Course, at Mile 11.8 Funny River Road, are finally open and our staff is ready to welcome you and assist in any way possible.
Our maintenance staff has been working hard and the course is coming in great! Newly added boulders, trees and new hole signs are just some of the beautification projects that we are working on. We are also working on expanding the green on No. 2 so it is more player friendly.
There have been many wildlife sightings on the course. Bring your camera to capture moose, eagles, coyotes and many more wild animals at play.
When you come out to enjoy the experience, be sure to give yourself enough time to try our 200-yard aqua driving range, or what moose call the swimming pool. There also is a pro shop available.
Call or stop in to check out our weekly events including Ladies Night on Mondays at 6:30 p.m. and Men's Night on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m.
Last week's winners included Pat Bird, Deanna Miller and Marilyn Eskelin on the women's team with the best-ball score of 41. The winning team for the men consisted of myself, Larry Hamilton and Mark Hordeman. We played a scramble format and finished with a score of 59.
Long drive that night was won by Roy Bird, but nobody could hit the green on the tough, 185-yard No. 6. The closest-to-the-pin money will still be up for grabs today.
It was a cold and windy Father's Day, but 12 men showed up for a Father's Day Scramble Tournament. The winning team consisted of Cal Larson, Tim Moeglein, Mark Hordeman and Chic Kishbaugh. They finished with a score of 1-under 73.
Long drive winner was Cal Larson and closest-to-the-pin honors went to Roy Bird. Fun was had by all.
Many more events are posted in the golf shop, but be sure to mark your calendars for the second annual Funny River Quilters Benefit Golf Tournament on July 16 and the Funny River Festival '05 Tournament on July 29.
We are happy to announce that we are in the process of forming the Bird Homestead Golf Association. The purpose of this association is to enter the scores from this course and obtain a handicapping system. The handicapping system will be furnished to us by the Alaska Golf Association. Our course already has a temporary rating from the United States Golf Association.
Everyone who joins also will belong to the USGA and AGA. You may also belong to multiple associations and we would appreciate your support for this Funny River Association. For more information, contact Rhonda Dettmer at 252-1545, Dianne Hamilton at 260-4653 or Patsy Bird at 252-9819.
