Three nominated for federal judgeship

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Three Alaska Superior Court judges have been recommended to the White House to replace U.S. District Judge H. Russel Holland, who plans to retire from active service Sept. 18.

Judges Michael Thompson of Ketchikan, Beverly Cutler of Palmer, and Ralph Beistline of Fairbanks got the support of Sen. Ted Stevens and the rest of Alaska's congressional delegation.

The three judges were among those rated highest in a poll of the Alaska Bar, Stevens said. He said he didn't include an Anchorage Superior Court judge who ranked highest in the poll because he thought it was time for a candidate to come from a community other than Anchorage. The last few judges picked for the federal bench in Alaska came from its largest city, he noted.

Background checks will be conducted on Thompson, Cutler and Beistline, then the White House legal counsel will decide which name to forward to President Bush for nomination.
