Russian River Sanctuary Area opens to fishing

Posted: Sunday, June 22, 2003

ANCHORAGE (AP) Fishing for red salmon is allowed again at the Russian River Sanctuary area.

The area was reopened Saturday because state biologists have determined the river's minimum spawning escapement goal of 14,000 early-run reds has been reached.

The word among anglers, however, is that fishing for reds is slow since the Russian River upstream of the sanctuary opened to fishing last weekend.

The sanctuary area normally opens to fishing in mid July. It opened a month early last year when a huge number of early-run salmon arrived ahead of schedule.

The bag and possession limit remains at three fish.
