Homer players get all-Region III honors

Region III champion Homer had two players nab First Team all-Region honors and three players nab Second Team all-Region honors in voting announced Friday.

Sophomore Scottie Owens and senior Ben Kuhns made the First Team. Owens, an outfielder, had a batting average of .447. Kuhns, a pitcher and shortstop, had a batting average of .419.

Sophomores Jim Pollack and Alex Trieweiler and senior Adam Crum made the Second Team. Pollack plays catcher and batted .387, Trieweiler plays third base and batted .441 and Crum plays first base and batted .281.

Local athletes compete at Special Olympics

The 2003 Special Olympics Alaska Summer Games drew nearly hundreds of athletes, coaches and volunteers to Anchorage June 13 to 15. The central peninsula and Seward were among the 10 communities represented. Following is the accomplishments of those local athletes:

Central peninsula

Michelle Davidson Second in 25-meter butterfly, second in 50 freestyle, third in 100 IM, first in 200 freestyle relay.

Chuck Davis Third in 10 assisted, first in 15 flotation, first in 15 assisted.

Kendra Deming Third in 25 freestyle, third in 50 backstroke, third in 50 freestyle, first in 200 free relay.

Robert Dillon First in 15 flotation, second in 15 walk, third in 25 flotation.

Daniel Endicott Fourth in 25 freestyle, fourth in 50 freestyle, first in 200 freestyle relay.

Corey Fisler Fourth in 25 backstroke, third in 50 freestyle, first in 200 free relay

Tracy takes second pole of season

PORTLAND, Ore. Paul Tracy won his second pole of the CART season, surprising himself with a lap of 120.565 mph on a rainy Saturday at Portland International Raceway.

It was his fifth front-row start of the season, first pole since last month at Brands Hatch in England, and 15th overall.
