In regards to the story in Friday’s paper of the family who allowed their pet dog Ozzie to run through a “known” bear area without a leash should indeed feel responsible for the injury to the dog.
This just saddens me that they had hindsight to carry a sidearm, yet not a leash.
It only makes sense to me that should the dog approach a bear, and is spooked, he will turn and run back to the safety of his owners with a bear in tow, putting the family at risk.
Did we not learn a lesson last year when the two dogs of another family made the same error and one of the pets was not found for several weeks?
If memory recalls, one of these animals was mauled by a bear. Again, no leash!
Not only has Ozzie been injured and could have possibly been killed, but we have now an injured bear that was needlessly shot in his own environment because of irresponsible pet owners.
People, please stop thinking you’re in the big city park. You’re in Alaska. We have bears.
