Volunteers boost Ninilchik Senior Center

Posted: Tuesday, June 22, 2010

Some very energetic and dedicated seniors held this benefit fundraiser barbecue and Biggest Clam Contest for the Ninichik Senior Center. A huge gazebo style greenhouse was made available by Alaska Greenhouse for the event at the corner of Kingsley Road and the Sterling Highway. For two full days June 12 and 13, Texas style brisket, Kentucky style pulled-pork, and Alaskan deep fried Halibut were served with enthusiasm. Home baked deserts were donated and vendors sold their wares. A 6 and 5/8ths inch clam took the $50 dollar prize which was kindly donated back. Over $7,500 was generated and donated to the Senior Center!

The spirit of generosity, purpose, and team work, was terrific. Over 30 people volunteered to set up, cook, serve, and clean up. Glen and Dianne Thomas, and Ken and Judy Rucker are to be credited as primary creators and contributors of this successful event. Without everyone working together it would not have happened. Many businesses helped them and the Ninilchik Senior Center wishes to extend a big thank you to a list that includes but is not limited to:

Alaska Greenhouse/Fort Knox Construction, Afishunt Charters, Alaska Waste American Legion, Chihuly's Charters, Deep Creek Custom Packing, Discover Alaskan Adventures, Doug Smith, Gary Deiman's Services, Jack of Arts, Hylen's Marine Services, Kenai Peninsula Fair Assoc., Ninilchik Charters, Ninilchik Health & Wellness Center, Ninilchik Saltwater Charters and Lodge, Ninilchik 132.6 Cabins & RV Park, Rod & Reel Charters, Scenic View RV Park, Shandy & Sons Charters, , Thomas Grinding, Twin Peaks Construction, Will's Copper King Charters.

The Senior Center's annual Garage Sale was also held last weekend. Hundreds of items were donated by people with all the proceeds going to support the Center. Raffle tickets for four different raffles were sold at both locations. Again the large number of volunteers was impressive.

We want to thank all of you who helped, spent money, and gave dollars above the prices to benefit of the Ninilchik Senior Center; a place dedicated to making life better for seniors and the surrounding community. The Center is located at the end of Aspen Street off Kingsley Road in Ninilchik. We encourage all seniors in the area come eat lunch and learn more about our services. The membership age is 45 and over. A welcoming group of folks, the best food on the Peninsula, assistance for seniors in need, a beautiful facility.
