Matti's Cowchip Triathlon was held Saturday at the Diamond M Ranch. The event is named for Matti Martin, who died in a livestock accident at the Kenai Peninsula State Fair in Ninilchik in August 2009. Martin won the first Cowchip Triathlon last year.
Darius (Toad) Martin completed the course barefoot, just as Matti did last year, to win the 10 and under category in 19 minutes, 42 seconds. For those 10 and under, the course was a 100-yard swim with an inner tube, a one-mile bike ride and a half mile run. Rhys Cannava won the girls 10 and under in 26:56. Also competing in the 10 and under category were Tyle Owens and Keegan Mattson. The 10 and under relay had one team, consisting of Kelli Kay, Delaney Johnson and Ryann Cannava.
The 11 to 16 group did a 250-yard tube, a 2.5-mile bike ride and a 1.5-mile run. Gracie Kautz won the girls event with a time of 52:24, while Karl Danielson and Chase Warron also competed with unofficial times. The open relay had one team of Danielsons -- Greta, Olen and Leif.
Organizer John Steckel said everybody enjoyed the event, despite the rain.
