Oilers lose sixth straight contest

The Peninsula Oilers baseball team couldn't snap out of its slump, dropping a pair of Alaska Baseball League games Friday and Saturday to the Anchorage Glacier Pilots at Mulcahy Stadium in Anchorage.

The Oilers led in the early innings Friday, but gave up a four-run seventh inning and lost 5-4.

The Oilers fared well in the early innings again Saturday, but a four-run sixth inning by the Pilots led to a 6-1 Anchorage win.

The losses drop the Oilers to 3-11 overall and 0-5 in ABL play. The Glacier Pilots move into first place in the ABL with a 5-2 league mark and a 9-5 overall record.

The Oilers scored first in Friday's game, getting a leadoff single from Brian Wahlbrink to open the game. Preston Griffin followed with an RBI double.

Anchorage scored to tie the game in the bottom of the first, but Peninsula scored a run in the third when Andy Schutzenhofer was hit by a pitch, took second on a Mike Cox groundout and scored on a single by Paul Richie.

The Oilers added two more runs in the fourth inning. Chris Graziano drew a one-out walk, stole second and scored on a double by Wahlbrink. After a groundout by Griffin, Schutzenhofer doubled to plate Wahlbrink.

Oilers starting pitcher A.J. Shappi cruised along until the seventh inning, when the Glacier Pilots chased him from the mound with two outs.

Jake Postlewait finished the game for the Oilers. Shappi was charged with four runs, two of them earned, on eight hits, walking two and striking out two in 6 2-3 innings. Postlewait gave up one earned run on one hit and walked one in 1 1-3 innings.

Schutzenhofer had three hits for the Oilers.

In Saturday's game, Oilers starter Tim Gorski kept the Glacier Pilots off the board through five innings while the Oilers scored in the top of the fifth to take a 1-0 lead.

Blake Jones singled with one out in the fifth and took second when Rusty Beale reached on an error. Graziano hit into a fielder's choice, but Wahlbrink followed with a single to score Jones.

Gorski ran into trouble in the bottom of the sixth inning when he was relieved with two outs.

The Glacier Pilots scored four runs on five hits and an Oilers error in the frame, then added two more runs in the seventh.
