Oilers fall twice to Glacier Pilots

Posted: Monday, June 23, 2003

The Peninsula Oilers got off to a rocky start in Alaska Baseball League play, losing both ends of a doubleheader to the Anchorage Glacier Pilots Sunday at Mulcahy Stadium in Anchorage.

Glacier Pilots pitchers dominated the Oilers during the twin bill. In the first game, the Oilers managed six hits in a 5-0 loss. In the second game, Peninsula had just one hit in a 1-0 loss.

Anchorage, which has now won six in a row, moves to 3-0 in the ABL and 7-4 overall. The Oilers, who had a two-game winning streak snapped, are 0-2 in the ABL and 6-7 overall.

The first game was scheduled for seven innings, and the Glacier Pilots turned up the heat early by jumping on Oilers starter and loser Randy Beam in the bottom of the first inning. Haas Pratt had the big hit for the Glacier Pilots in the inning, doubling to score Jose Ortega and Michael Paulk.

The score stayed 2-0 until the sixth inning thanks to solid work by Beam and Pilots starter and winner Mathew Jakubov.

The Oilers had their chances, including loading the bases with two outs in the top of the second, but could never get a big hit against the Pilots. Peninsula stranded nine runners on base.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Pilots broke the game open against Beam. The big blow was a double by Jordan Szabo, which scored two runners and made it 5-0.

Jakubov exited after the sixth inning for the Pilots, giving up six hits while striking out five and walking two. Hector Ambiriz worked the final inning for the Pilots, holding the Oilers hitless.

The second game belonged to Pilots starter and winner Ryan Rote. Rote worked eight innings, gave up one hit, fanned 11 and walked just one. Ricki Fairchild finished up the game for the Pilots, pitching a scoreless ninth.

Jake Postlewaite was the hard-luck loser for the Oilers, giving up one unearned run on eight hits in seven innings of work. Postlewaite walked one and struck out four. Mike Ekstrom pitched the final inning for the Oilers, allowing no runs and a hit.

The Pilots got their one run in the bottom of the fifth inning. John Dyson led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a single by Jacoby Ellsbury. Dyson reached third on an error, then scored on a bunt by Ortega.

Meanwhile, the Oilers were having no luck against Rote. Paul John Zobeck, a graduate of Soldotna High School, broke up Rote's perfect game in the sixth inning when he walked. Zobeck would advance no further than second.

In the top of the eighth, Dusty Bensko singled to break up Rote's no-hitter, but go no further than first base.

The Oilers will look to warm up their bats today when they face the Anchorage Bucs in ABL action in a 7:15 p.m. game at Mulcahy Stadium.
