Spruce bark beetles to be program's topic

The Science on the Kenai interpretive program at 3 p.m. today at the Kenai Visitors and Cultural Center will feature Mike Fastabend of the Kenai Peninsula Borough speaking about spruce bark beetles and their socioeconomic impact on the peninsula. For more information, call Jay Barrett at 283-1991.

Youth appreciation week planned

Today is the first day of the fourth annual Youth Appreciation Week in Homer. From 3 to 6 p.m. at the Homer High School parking lot there is carnival.

Events for the remainder of the week include a beach party and barbecue at Bishop's Beach from 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday; wilderness hike and scavenger hunt at the Pratt Museum from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday; skate party from 1 to 4 p.m. and pool party from 6 to 8 p.m. at the high school Thursday; open house at the Boys and Girls Club from 2 to 5 p.m. and a street dance and barbecue at the point of view plaza from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday; and a barbecue and fish for fun at the reservoir from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Simulated missions offered

The Challenger Learning Center of Alaska offers simulated space missions Mondays at 1 p.m. Missions are open to fifth-graders through adults for $25 per person. There is a 14-person minimum and preregistration is required. For more information, call 283-2000.

Author to speak about oil industry

Judith Kimerling, author of "Amazon Crude" and a recognized expert on oil development's impact on the Amazon rain forest will speak Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Kachemak Conservation Center, 3734 Ben Walters Lane in Homer. For more information, call (907) 235-4068.
