Juneau Assembly passes parking ordinance

JUNEAU (AP) The Juneau Assembly passed an ordinance that will change parking in the downtown by turning certain areas into loading zones for part of the day.

The measure, passed Monday night, is an effort to relieve congestion.

Under the ordinance, spaces on the water side of South Franklin and Front streets will be reserved for loading from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m., with the exception of two 15-minute parking spaces in front of the Heritage Building. After 11 a.m., the loading zones turn into parking for the general public.

Police Capt. Tom Porter said the ordinance will affect 12 to 15 parking spaces and could be enforced as early as late July. Violators will be fined $100.
