Miners notch 10-3 victory to drop Peninsula to 0-4 in Alaska Baseball League

Oilers' pitching, defense collapses

Posted: Wednesday, June 25, 2003

The one thing the Peninsula Oilers have been able to rely on in this short season has been pitching, but even that went south Tuesday night.

The Oilers lost 10-3 to the Mat-Su Miners at Hermon Brothers Field in Palmer.

The Miners improve to 5-2 in the Alaska Baseball League and 9-5 overall. The Oilers are now 0-4 in the ABL and 6-9 overall.

Peninsula committed four errors on the evening, and in the bottom of the first Mat-Su's Matt Young scored on one of those errors on Oilers starter and loser Stephan Kahn.

In the bottom of the second, the Miners put the Oilers in a 5-0 hole, an especially tough place for a team that had a .204 batting average entering Tuesday's contest.

The big blow in the bottom of the second inning was a double by Mike Kelly, which scored three runners. Joey Hooft also doubled in the inning to knock in a run.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Mat-Su piled on another two runs as Kelly and Matt Inouye scored on errors.

The lead jumped to 8-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning when Jeff Butts doubled and scored on a wild pitch.

Mat-Su added its final two runs in the bottom of the seventh.

The one bright spot for the Oilers is that they were able to avoid being shut out for the third time in four ABL games.

In the top of the ninth inning, David Uribes led off with a single. Josh Lex then flied out, but Garrett Schoenberger singled. After Joe Holland reached on a fielder's choice, Dusty Bensko cleared the bases with a three-run home run.

The win went to Jason Snyder, who worked eight scoreless innings, giving up three hits while walking one and striking out four. David Johnson pitched the final inning for the Miners.

The Oilers will face the Miners again today at 7 p.m. and look to snap their four-game losing skid. The game can be heard on 1140 KSLD.
