Twins continue to have trouble in Florida

Posted: Sunday, June 25, 2006

The American Legion Twins trip to Florida continues to be a learning experience as the Kenai squad dropped a pair of games to Florida teams at the Firecracker Tournament in DeLand.

On Friday, the Twins were blanked 15-0 by a team from West Tampa. The Twins managed just three hits in the game, all singles, by Luke Oliver, Kevin Epperheimer and Jordan Waters.

The Twins’ best scoring opportunity came in the fourth inning, when they loaded the bases with one out. West Tampa turned a double play to get out of the inning, though.

In Saturday’s game, the Twins were within a run of Deltona through 5 1/2 innings, but Deltona struck for five runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Twins came back with two runs in the top of the seventh but could get no closer as Deltona won 8-4.

The Twins tied the game at 1 in the top of the third when Steven Mabeus doubled to center and advanced when Kris Netschert reached on an error. Mabeus scored on a sacrifice fly by Shawn Isaacs.

A run for the Twins in the fourth inning pulled them to within a run, 3-2. Jordan Waters walked and was replaced on the basepaths with courtesy runner Ben Stalker. Stalker advanced on a single and a base on balls, and scored on a single by Mabeus.

Oliver and Isaacs drew walks in the seventh inning and scored on a single by Epperheimer and a passed ball, respectively.

The Twins didn’t have another chance to cut in to Deltona’s lead in the seven-inning game, though.

The Twins wrap up their trip to Florida today. They next play at home in the Bill Miller Big Fish Tournament, July 3 to 6 at Coral Seymour Memorial Park in Kenai.
