ANCHORAGE (AP) -- Two people drowned over the weekend and another two were missing and presumed drowned in separate incidents, Alaska State Troopers said.
A rafting accident killed a man late Sunday afternoon at Sixmile River along the Hope Highway. Troopers said David Worman, 40, of Kenai, died after the raft he was riding capsized on the river.
The accident occurred just after 5 p.m. Trooper spokesman Greg Wilkinson said three rafts were on the river when two overturned, one with six people aboard and the other with five.
Raft guides brought Worman and a woman to shore, but Worman was not breathing. A helicopter took Worman to Providence Alaska Medical Center, were he was declared dead at 6 p.m. All rafters were wearing life jackets and helmets, Wilkinson said.
A second accident occurred at Bird Creek about 9 p.m. Wilkinson said an 13-year-old boy called troopers via cellular telephone saying his father, 40-year-old Steve Royer of Anchorage, was swept away as the two tried to cross the creek by holding the rope stretched across the creek marking the cutoff point for fishing, about a third of a mile up the creek.
The Anchorage Fire Department's dive team and a helicopter from the Rescue Coordination Center responded and were searching the creek and shoreline for Royer late Sunday night.
A boy from the southwest Alaska village of Akiachak drowned Saturday night in the Kuskokwim River, troopers said.
Roderick Nose, 6, was swimming in the river with friends late Saturday when they realized he was missing.
A search was launched and his body was found in the river at about 10 p.m. Saturday night. Rescuers tried, without success, to resuscitate the boy.
Troopers searched through the weekend for a Colorado man missing in Chelatna Lake, 45 miles west of Talkeetna.
Ryan Goode, 21, of Montrose, Colo. left the Chelatna Lake Lodge Friday morning to go fishing at the north end of the lake, troopers said. A search was launched when he failed to return to the lodge later that day. Goode was an employee at the lodge.
