Saxman city manager steps down

KETCHIKAN (AP) -- Saxman City Manager Tom Fitzgerald, 59, is stepping down after six years and will accept a half-time job as director of the Saxman Seaport.

Fitzgerald, who underwent stem cell transplants in 1998 and 1999, said Friday that follow-up treatments in Seattle are necessary occasionally. He said it's a problem for the city for him to suddenly leave in the middle of its business.

Fitzgerald might work on other projects for the city in addition to his work at the seaport but will avoid filling up his schedule, he said.

Fitzgerald said he and his wife, Diane, have a home in Saxman and plan to remain there.
