Potton

Potton flying high with Air Force

Tom Potton, a 1995 graduate of Soldotna High School, is scheduled to graduate from initial jet fighter training at Vance Air Force Base in Enid, Okla., on June 30. Potton did his initial military pilot training at Whiting Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Fla. Since October he has been training in the T-38 jet (formerly the F-5), learning precision high-speed flying, aerobatic maneuvers and formation and low-level flight skills. After graduation he will receive his Air Force pilot wings and make a 10-year commitment to the Air Force.

Potton received his early pilot training and private license in Alaska under the instruction of his father, Tom Potton Sr., of Soldotna. He studied commercial aviation and Russian language at Kenai Peninsula College and received a degree in commercial aviation at the University of Alaska Anchorage. He also assisted in testing and working with the new “Cap Stone” navigation system, now widely used in Alaska.

He is married to Wendy (Hibpshman) Potton, formerly of Nikiski, and has two daughters, Mayzie, 6, and Ashlyn, 1. His parents, Tom and Capri Potton, and sisters, Heidi and Nicole Potton, will attend the ceremony. He also has a brother, Daniel Potton. His mother-in-law, Jodi Hibpshman, of Nikiski, will also attend.
