Diesel spill reported in Auke Bay

Posted: Wednesday, June 27, 2001

JUNEAU (AP) -- About 400 gallons of diesel fuel spilled Tuesday morning from a fuel dock at a marina in Auke Bay, about 13 miles from downtown Juneau.

U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Joe Paitl said a flexible hose connection in a pipeline burst about 9 a.m. at Andrew's Marina. A citizen reported the spill, and the pipeline was quickly shut down to prevent more fuel from leaking, he said.

Coast Guard and state Department of Environmental Conservation workers surrounded the spill area with containment boom and recovered about 230 gallons of fuel. There were no reports of oiled wildlife or property.

Paitl said Tuesday afternoon that cleanup will continue, but most of the fuel had dissipated.
