Anchorage police say DNA evidence links man to homicide

Posted: Thursday, June 27, 2002

ANCHORAGE (AP) -- Anchorage police said DNA evidence links a suspect to a 2-year-old murder.

Lance Hinson, 34, appeared in Anchorage District Court Tuesday to hear the charge of first-degree murder filed against him.

Hinson is charged with killing Tina Shangin, 59, whose body was found Aug. 6, 2000.

Shangin was one of six minority women murdered in the city in 1999 and 2000. The homicides sparked fears that a single killer was targeting the women.

Police said Tuesday that they didn't think Hinson was involved in any of the remaining four unsolved killings and they said it doesn't appear that any of the homicides were committed by the same person.

Investigators said Hinson has long been a suspect in Shangin's murder but DNA tests linking him to the crime were completed just three months ago.

Hinson is being held on $25,000 bail.
