Area students make dean's lists

Former Kenai resident Kimberlee Allen was named to the dean's list at the University of Nevada. To make the list Allen had to complete at least 12 credits during the semester with a grade point average of 3.7 or higher.

Allen placed in the top 10 percent of her class and has been recommended to apply for a Rhodes, Fulbright or Goldwater fellowship.

She is the daughter of Debbie and Gerry Allen.

The following students were named to the dean's list at the University of Idaho. To make the list, undergraduate students must earn a term grade point average of 3.5 or better on 12 or more graded credits and law students at least a 3.0 grade point average on a minimum of 10 graded credits.

Homer: Stacy Owens, Abigail Fuller and Nicholas Fuller;

Kenai: Jayson BeDunnah;

Seward: Shannon Hohl; and

Soldotna: Nicholas Horn, Matthew Janz, Cody Michal and Sarah Todd.

Josh D. Brantley was named to the dean's list at Valley City State University. The dean's list recognizes students who complete 12 semester hours or more with a grade point average of at least 3.5.

The following students were named to the dean's list a Gonzaga University. To make the list student must earn a 3.7 or higher grade point average: Jennifer Frances Senette and Kaitlin Brett Vadla, both of Soldotna.

Area students graduate

The following former Soldotna residents graduated from Valley City State University: Severin Wright Gardner re-ceived a bachelor of science degree in education and Shaun C. Williams graduated cum laude with a bachelor of science degree.

Former Sterling resident Shannon Tappana Sorensen graduated cum laude from Eastern Oregon University with a bachelor's degree in psychology. While there she was a member of the psychology honor society.

She is the daughter of Ann and Mack Tappana, wife of Shaun and mother of Auree. She is a 1998 graduate of Soldotna High School.

The Sorensens will remain in Moscow, Idaho, where Shaun is working on his master's degree in fine arts at the University of Idaho.

The following students recently graduated from the University of Oregon.

Kenai: Matthew Dale Jefferson with a bachelor of science degree in political science and Jayme Rebecca Taylor with a bachelor of arts degree in anthropology and French;

Nikiski: Seth Arthur Ernst Tauriainen with a bachelor of science degree in physics and mathematics; and

Soldotna: Jennifer Sue Knutson with doctorate of philosophy, school psychology and certificate of school psychology; and Kara Elizabeth Merrill graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor of arts degree in journalism: electronic media and journalism and public relations.

While there, Merrill received the Ann Curry Scholarship for outstanding journalism student and was nominated for membership to Kappa Tau Alpha a national honor society for seniors and graduate students exhibiting superior performance in the field of journalism.

She has received the Centurion Award acknowledging her contributions and achievements while at the university. The Centurion Award is reserved for the top 100 students and is awarded to students demonstrating dedication and outstanding service as student leaders and for their academic accomplishments. She was elected president of the universitiy's chapter of National Mortar Board Honor Society, a national honor society that bases selection on scholarship, leadership and community service. She also is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, the Order of Omega Honor Society and the Pi Beta Phi sorority. She was the vice president of Scholarship Pi Beta Phi sorority. Merrill was elected to the Pan Hellenic Council and served as scholarship vice president and won a national Greek leadership award for scholastic programming. She also studied abroad at the University of Tubingen in Tubingen, Germany.

She currently is employed with Aerotek in Portland, Ore., where she will recruit for the aerospace and engineering division.

She is the daughter of Sharon and Scott Merrill of Soldotna and granddaughter of Miriam and Dick Woodin of Kenai and Jack Merrill of Reading, Mass. Merrill is a 2001 graduate of Soldotna High School.
