Pilots send Oilers to 5th straight loss, 4-3

Posted: Tuesday, June 27, 2006

The Peninsula Oilers wrapped up a six-game road trip with their fifth straight loss, dropping a 4-3 Alaska Baseball League game to the Anchorage Glacier Pilots Monday at Mulcahy Stadium in Anchorage.

The Oilers will try to snap their skid tonight against the Alaska Goldpanners of Fairbanks at Coral Seymour Memorial Park in Kenai. Game time is 7 p.m.

The Oilers led Monday’s game early, scoring a pair of runs in the first inning on an RBI single by Brian Van Kirk and a sacrifice fly by David Newby.

The Glacier Pilots touched up Oilers starter Austin Yount for a pair of runs in the second inning, but the Peninsula squad regained its lead in the fourth inning. Matt Clark singled, advanced on a groundout by Jim Pollack and took third on a single by Kip Masuda. Clark scored on a base hit by Chris Nelson.

Yount went six innings for the Oilers, giving up just two runs on four hits. Taylor Bills pitched a scoreless seventh, notching a strikeout with a runner at third base to end the frame.

David Miller started the eighth on the mound for the Oilers, but surrendered a single and a two-run Homer as the Pilots took their first lead of the game on Ben Lasater’s blast to left. Ryan Mottern relieved Miller and got three outs, two of them on strikeouts, to get out of the eighth, but the Oilers couldn’t tie up the game in the top of the ninth.

Travis Hill got the win for the Glacier Pilots. Miller took the loss.

Nelson, Van Kirk and Clark each had two hits for the Oilers.
