Mike Sounart, in ball cap, makes a phone call with his wife Debbie shortly after he struck an adult moose on the Kenai Spur Highway in front of Kenai Central High School on Thursday evening as Kenai Police officers Dan Smith and Kelly George finish paperwork. Sounart, who was driving alone, said the moose ran out in front of him in heavy traffic. "I didn't see it until it was a foot from the car," he said. "It was in a full-out run. I was probably going 40 miles per hour." Sounart's Saturn sedan caught the animal at its knees and sent onto the windshield. Medics from the Kenai Fire Department examined Sounart at the scene, but he escaped injury. The animal was killed by the impact. It was donated to charity.
