McGrath (AP) -- Alaska State Troopers discovered a major marijuana growing operation on the Kuskokwim River.

More than 300 marijuana plants were found Tuesday about 27 air miles south of McGrath. Troopers also found two rifles and a handgun at the site. They seized a generator, hydroponic growing equipment and documents identifying possible suspects.

Troopers were directed to the site after responding to a report of an assault in McGrath on Sunday. While investigating the assault, they discovered 11 marijuana plants in a home.

Troopers said information from the Village Public Safety Officer and local residents led them to the marijuana-growing site downriver.

The investigation is continuing and charges are expected to be filed when it is completed, troopers said.
