Peninsula closed to open burning

The Division of Forestry closed all open burning for areas on the Kenai Peninsula Wednesday, including burning in barrels.

According to a press release issued by the Division of Forestry, campfires are allowed in designated campgrounds in Seward and in other areas and on private property. Forestry warns individuals to keep campfires in a dirt area or fire ring away from vegetation, including moss or peat. Water must also be on hand to extinguish fires and a fire must be attended until it is completely out.

Forestry also encourages homeowners to keep flammable material at least 100 feet away from structures, and to enclose openings to prevent embers from from entering their homes.
