Peninsula one game out of first in Alaska Baseball League

Oilers snap four-game skid

Posted: Friday, June 29, 2001

The Peninsula Oilers snapped a four-game losing streak Thursday, defeating Athletes in Action Alaska 15-3 in Alaska Baseball League action at Growden Memorial Park in Fairbanks.

The win, coupled with losses by the Mat-Su Miners and the Anchorage Glacier Pilots, moves the Oilers to within one game of first place in the ABL.

The Oilers road trip continues with the series finale against AIA today (7 p.m., 1140 KSLD), and a four-game set against the Alaska Goldpanners of Fairbanks starting Saturday (7 p.m., 1140 KSLD).

The Oilers actually trailed AIA 2-1 through four innings, but the Peninsula side plated three runs in the top of the fifth inning and never looked back.

Creighton Kahoalii led off the frame with a home run to tie the score. Jackson Coleman followed with a walk, swiped two bases to advance to third and scored on a single by Mark Teahen.

Teahen crossed the plate on a double by Luke Simmons.

AIA responded with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Oilers blew the game wide open with seven runs in the top of the sixth inning, taking advantage of two AIA errors.

The first six Peninsula batters of the inning reached and scored, and Trey Hendricks provided the big blast with his two-run homer. Justin Seely and Coleman had the other Oilers hits of the inning, each notching a single.

The Oilers padded their lead with four runs in the top of the eighth inning. The Oilers loaded the bases on a Teahen single, a hit-by-pitch to Wilton Reynolds and a base on balls by Luke Simmons.

Seely walked to drive in a run, Hendricks hit an RBI single, Horwitz drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Coleman's fielder's choice plated the final Peninsula run of the ballgame.

Chris Reilly picked up the win for the Oilers, giving up three runs on seven hits in seven innings of work. Reilly struck out seven and walked five AIA batters.

Mike Mendez worked the final two innings for the Oilers, giving up one hit, striking out one and hitting one batter.

Troy Parton took the loss for AIA.
