Oilers can't get out of hole vs. Bucs

Posted: Tuesday, June 29, 2004

The good news for the Peninsula Oilers is that starting pitcher Steve Morlock recovered from a rough first inning Monday and struck out nine Anchorage Bucs batters.

The bad news for the Oilers was that the visiting Bucs were able to plate four runs in that first inning, a hole the home team wasn't able to dig out of in a 7-3 Alaska Baseball League loss at Coral Seymour Memorial Park in Kenai.

The Bucs plated four first-inning runs on just two hits but were aided by a hit batsman, a pair of walks, a passed ball and an error.

Morlock settled in after that, getting his second strikeout of the game to end the first inning and then picking up seven more over the next five innings. Morlock walked just two batters both in the first inning and kept the Bucs batters on their heels until Anchorage catcher Trevor Weedon hit a double to lead off the seventh.

Anchorage starter DeWayne Carver was just as stingy, though, holding the Oilers to one run on five hits through seven innings.

Chris Minaker scored the first run of the game for the Oilers, leading off the bottom of the fourth inning with a single, advancing to third on a single by Nick Kliebert and scoring on a groundout to second by Andy Dahl, cutting the Bucs lead to three runs.

Anchorage added a run in the seventh when Weedon doubled and scored on a pair of sacrifice bunts. Oilers second baseman Eric Newby fielded the second bunt and threw home, but Weedon was called safe in a close play at the plate.

Anchorage added two more unearned runs in the eighth.

The Oilers got two of those runs back in the bottom of the eighth when Minaker hit a two-run homer against Bucs reliever Dennis LeDuc.

The Oilers defense did keep the Bucs off the basepaths after the first inning as catcher Matt Eichel threw out four would-be base stealers and Morlock picked off another at second.
