Oilers make it two straight wins

Posted: Thursday, June 29, 2006

The Peninsula Oilers made it two in a row, defeating the Alaska Goldpanners of Fairbanks 6-3 in Alaska Baseball League play Wednesday at Coral Seymour Memorial Park in Kenai.

The finale of the series is tonight, with game time slated for 7.

The Oilers broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning in Wednesday’s game, loading the bases with one out on a single by Brian Van Kirk and walks to David Newby and Matt Clark. The next batter, Jordan Opdyke, slapped a ball down to third base. The Panners third baseman threw home to get the force out, but the Fairbanks catcher’s throw to first got away from the first baseman. Not only were the Goldpanners unable to complete the double play to get out of the inning, Newby was able to take advantage of the muffed throw to score the go-ahead run on the play.

One batter later, Rocky Laguna drove in a pair of insurance runs for the Oilers with his triple to the wall.

Matt Trink picked up the win for the Oilers, giving up a run in two innings of relief work.

Oilers starter Andre Lamontagne pitched six solid innings, allowing two runs on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Ricky Heines pitched the ninth to pick up the save.

The Oilers took a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning. Chris Nelson picked up an RBI single in the frame.

The Oilers added a run in the sixth on an RBI single by Opdyke.

The Goldpanners tied the game at 3 with two runs in the seventh. With the bases loaded and none out, Trink got a comebacker to the mound and threw home for the force out. Catcher Kip Masuda then threw to first for the double play.

However, the Goldpanners’ Matt Stevens connected for a two-run single before Masuda was able to gun him down trying to steal second to end the inning.

Opdyke and Austin Yount each finish with two hits for the Oilers.
