Reminder: No fireworks in the forest

The Chugach National Forest Service reminds those recreating in the woods this July Fourth holiday that fireworks are illegal. Citations will be issued for using fireworks, and penalties include fines of up to $500 and/or jail time.

There also is a burn ban on Chugach National Forest Land due to dry fuel conditions. Campfires are allowed only in existing fire pits or rings in established campgrounds or recreational areas. All fires should be put out properly by dousing with water until no heat can be felt on the back of the hand. Coals may need to be stirred up and doused several times to ensure the fire is out.

Hike with naturalist Dominique Collet planned

Naturalist and author Dominique Collet will lead a hike near Summit Lake on July 14 at 9 a.m. The hike will focus on Alaska's unique woodland plant life. Participants should be ready to explore both on and off the beaten path.
