Kenai Golf Course took a 3 1/2 to 2 1/2 lead on Friday after the first round of the Twin Cities Walker Cup at Birch Ridge. The Walker Cup pits Birch Ridge and Kenai Golf Course against each other in a series of alternate shot, best ball and singles matches.
This is the third year of the Walker Cup. The first year, the two sides tied at Birch Ridge. Last year, Birch Ridge stormed to a 14 1/2 to 9 1/2 win at Kenai Golf Course.
The wins for Kenai on Thursday in the alternate shot came from Todd Eskelin and Bob Sizemore, who defeated Steve Dexheimer and Mike Chenault by being ahead five holes with four remaining; Billy Applewhite and Bill Burtram, who topped George Stein and Zach Cowan six and five; and Craig Jung and Caleb Sizemore, who topped Jeff Hetrick and Marty Arnoldy three and two. Birch Ridge received victories from Jay Kriner and Mike Hollingsworth, who defeated Gordon Griffin and Doug Jung four and three; and Brennan Jackson and Kevin Downs, who defeated Jerry Norris and Mike Navarre five and three. Noel Widmayer and Ken Liedes of Kenai Golf Course tied Gerry Winkler and Gary Stackhouse of Birch Ridge.
The Walker Cup continues with best ball matches today at 6 p.m. at Birch Ridge and singles matches on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Birch Ridge.
