Twins falll to Bartlett in a road double-dip

The American Legion Twins dropped two away games in a doubleheader against Bartlett Sunday in Anchorage. The Golden Bears won the first game 13-3 in an eight-inning game shortened by the 10-run rule, and won the second game -- scheduled to go only seven innings -- 8-7 in an extra inning.

"These kids are playing with all their hearts," said Twins manager Lance Coz. "They're only going to get better."

In Game 1, the Twins scored the first runs, with Nick Weigle plating Kenneth Butler and Robby Rounsaville with a single in the top of the third inning.

Bartlett responded with one run at the bottom of the inning off of a Erich Simpson error. The Twins returned the favor in the next frame when Jacob Madrid hit a double to score Zack Hicks.

But Bartlett's bats got heavy in the bottom of the fourth, and the Bears hit in four runs off Weigle's pitching. Bartlett shut down the Twins hitting and scored eight more runs before the game was called.

In the second game, the Bears got out to a two-run lead in the early innings, but the Twins offense was revived in the top of the fourth by a six-hit rally started off by Rounsaville.

The Twins scored five runs with RBIs from Weigle, Madrid Simpson, Alex Johansen and Scott Foster, taking the lead at 5-1 at the end of the series.

Bartlett was able to get back in the game, however, capitalizing on Twins errors. Two errors in the bottom of the fourth turned into runs for Bartlett to add to an earned run in the inning.

After scoring two more runs in the fifth inning to put the Twins up 7-5, the Twins gave up another crucial error in the top of the seventh that swung the game to the Bears.

At the bottom seventh with two outs and a Bartlett run already scored, Weigle cleanly fielded a slow grounder from second. He overthrew the toss to first base that would have ended the inning and prevented a runner on third from scoring.

"We were making errors at key times allowing the team to get back in," Coz said. "In a close ball game you just can't do that. You've got to have the best opportunity to win."

Bartlett got out of the top of the extra frame without a run from the Twins and scored a run at the bottom half of the inning for the win.
