I have always applauded the city of Kenai for building the Kenai Recreation Center and giving the community a place to play and exercise. In a "Letter to the Editor" on June 25, Jim Butler wrote that the rec center is a luxury and not a core service to our fair city.
As a parent of three children who have used the recreational resources of the city, I feel that it's an essential service that first-rate cities should provide. I feel the city of Kenai has done an excellent job in running the center and it was a knee-jerk reaction by the city council and its top administrators to hand over the keys to the Boys and Girls Club.
I feel that the city council and the mayor should be proud that the community has told them that they are doing a good job. But no, they have tried to push this action over the objections of the Parks and Recreation Committee and of all citizens who have taken the time to attend council meetings.
Use the boys and girls as a resource not as a club.
