Kenai Golf Report: Kenai Golf Course could use showers

Posted: Wednesday, June 30, 2004

Kenai Golf Course fairways are getting mighty thirsty and some rain during the nights would be simply perfect. It seems like everything else, it is difficult to have a balance of everything. The watering crew certainly soaks the greens during the night. They usually start at 10 p.m. and put in their day of work in the middle of the night.

Yours truly knew I had spent too much time on the computer the other night when I noticed the watering crew driving home at 4:30 a.m. and I was still updating the photos on the site. Added many photos of golfers playing at Kenai Golf Course.

Mixed Doubles

The Don and Jan Erwin team took all the awards for the regular Monday night mixed doubles event. They had the fewest putts and the fewest strokes in the nine-hole event. Don and Jan certainly are regulars at the Kenai Golf Course and they are enjoying their golf outings.

Mark your calendars for the weekly event. The tee times start at 6:10 p.m. and continue until all groups are out. This is a relaxed golfing outing. Call in your tee time at 283-7500.

Kenai Cup

The winners of the Kenai Cup matches this week were the teams of Eldon Harvey and Ryan Harvey, the Dave Ramsey and Ed Marsh team, the Felix and Pam Martinez team, the Tom Allison and Noel Widmayer team, the Tim Green and Dana Bassel team and the Dan Cabrera and Jeff Johns team. Other winners were the Chris Sonnichsen and Tom Bennett team, the Jerry Norris and Gary Katsion team and the Joe Deveaux and Greg Horton team.

This week regular matches will be played on Wednesday. However, July 7 there will be a mid-season event aside from the matches. Format will be announced.

Junior Golf

Over the weekend Beau Forrest went to Anchorage and played in a Calloway Junior World Championship qualifier at the Eagleglen Golf Course. He placed second in the tournament. The second-place finish qualified Beau to play in California at Torey Pines in Southern California. He will participate in several days of golf clinics and then play with other juniors from other states. Beau shot an 81 on the first day and a 79 the second day.

Beau leaves on July 7 for a week of great golfing and practice sessions with other juniors. Congratulations, Beau, and show those golfers Outside how well-mannered our junior golfers are in Alaska. Have a great time and enjoy it.

The second session of the junior golf program is now under way. The juniors are busy hitting balls, pitching and putting and heading out on the course.

Kenai Golf Course Caf Drawing

The first drawing for a dozen golf balls was won by Todd Eskelin. Charles Waguespack won a shirt in the second drawing. Al Steel won a sport bag in another drawing and the last drawing for a shirt was won by Jim Batchelder. There will be a grand drawing for a golf bag toward the end of the season. Sign up in the clubhouse.

Upcoming Events

There will be open golfing Saturday. This is usually a tournament day. However, due to schedule changes, the days are open for play. No tournaments on those days.

A Birdie Told Me

Renee Alvarez carded his best score ever at Kenai Golf Course this week. Renee shot a 75 and was very elated to have done so. His best score to that point was an 80 at Kenai Golf Course. Congratulations Renee! A 75 on any golf course is wonderful but on the Kenai Golf Course it is super!
