Kenai Golf Report: Brown Bears Tourney, actual brown bear hit Kenai Golf Course

Posted: Wednesday, June 30, 2010

My better half and I spent a wonderful Monday evening walking our clubs around the back nine at the Kenai Golf Course. I was very pleased to run across a friend I had not seen in a while, Jeremy Selfridge, who was out enjoying the scenery and weather. A big shout out to all my Schlumberger buddies, I miss you guys! Karen Shier, good luck keeping them in line.

While on the back, we observed a young man playing golf with his small son several holes behind us. Gary Rogers and Tristan were having a great time from all appearances. Tristan spent part of the time on Dad's shoulders and the other part carrying his little putter and following Dad as he played. From the big smiles on both faces and the delighted laughter we could hear, I am pretty sure their evening was a big success.

As we prepared to start our round, I noticed a sign on the front desk advising golfers that a brown bear, a sow with cubs, had been seen on the course on the third and 17th holes. Apparently, she was not in the best of moods as she destroyed a couple of the water boxes and bit a couple of flagsticks in half. My response to Gordon after he shared these tidbits with us was, "And you thought women with PMS had bad attitudes!"

The Men's Short Game Clinic is this week on Thursday and Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. There is a $35 fee for this clinic. The next Ladies' Clinic will be held July 26 through 28 from 6 to 8 p.m. and will cost $50. Also to be held July 26 through 28 is the Junior Clinic, which will run from 10:00 a.m. to noon. The most recent crop of graduates of our Junior Golf Program at the Kenai Golf Course were: Brooke Belluomini, Andy Carver, Taylor Carver, Hannah Carver, Megan Carver, Jack Graham, Paul Kopp, Lance Kramer, Julie Lythfield, Austin Osborne, Cydnee Sledge and Heidi Watkins. Congratulations, kids!

A Birdie Told Me -- Congratulations to Jake Eubank, who won his flight in the New Alaska State Junior Tour and to Tyler Yamada for finishing third. With a total of 14 juniors participating from around the state, this was excellent results for our local boys. Great job, guys! Nolan Rose shot an excellent round of 74 on a cold, rainy, windy day recently. Way to go, Nolan!

General Manager's Report -- The Brown Bears Tournament this past weekend was a great success. Nineteen teams participated, which represents an increase of 50 percent from last year. Jack Focose anticipates that this tournament will continue to grow over the years. Great job, Jack, for your hard work and thanks to you and all that helped.

Both the Ladies and Juniors clinics went extremely well this past week. Tommy Carver did an excellent job as always on the Junior Clinic. Many thanks to Mark Griffin, Ron Goecke, Tommy Carver and Derek Crowder for a job well done on the Ladies Clinic.

July tournament action starts with the Firefighters Tournament on July 17, followed by the KGA Monthly Event on July 18. The Walker Cup will be held July 22, 23 and 25. The United Way Tournament will be held on July 24. The Alliance Tournament finishes up the July events on July 13. We hope to see you at some of these great events.

The course is in great shape. Recent rains have really helped the fairways and the greens are in really good shape. Thursday, the greens will be cut a little shorter and remain that way for the rest of the season.

Thank you, Dwight Kramer, for all your extra help as well as being a great marshal for us. Your dedication to the Kenai Golf Course is very much appreciated. Thank you, Dusty Culbreath and Willie Perkins, for doing such a great job on our greens. Thank you, Skip Dove, for making the ball gathering device for our putting green.

As always, see you on the course. -- Gordon Griffin

Nine seniors enjoyed some friendly competition on June 22. Jerry Norris shot 43 earning him low gross, while Dale Sandahl's 43 earned him low net. Charlie Waguespack had the closest to the pin.

Derek Crowder, Derek Kaufmann, Truckee LeMay and Chris Murray were the winning team in the Brown Bears Tournament, coming in at 13 under! WOW - great job! Congratulations and great job to Jack Focose for a wonderful tournament.

Even though you can't really tell it yet, the days are getting shorter and our summers always go way too fast. It's hard getting everything done that we all need to do much less what we want to do, but I can't think of anything much more pleasant than enjoying a well-earned adult beverage and friendly conversation on the deck at the pro shop after golfing at the Kenai Golf Course.

I will see you there.
