Writers' group meets today

The Kenai Writers' Group meets today at 6 p.m. in the Kenai library conference room. Anyone interested can bring two hard copies of something they've written to share with the group. For more information, call 283-7305.

Kids' summer art workshops planned

On July 10, Stephanie Cox will teach a class on color mixing and the color wheel color for kindergarten through third-graders from 10:30 a.m. to noon and a class on painting with watercolors for kids in fourth grade and higher from 12:30 to 2 p.m. The cost is $20, plus tax.

On July 17, Cox will teach a class on charcoal animals in motion for kindergarten through third-graders from 10:30 a.m. to noon and a class on scratch art for kids in fourth grade and higher from 12:30 to 2 p.m. The cost is $20, plus tax.

On Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 11 a.m. to noon from July 20 to 29, Cox will teach an art and design class about exploring the elements in 3-D design. The class is $75, plus tax. In the afternoon of those days, from 12:30 to 1:30, Cox will teach an intermediate hand-built pottery and sculpture class. Students can glaze their creations Aug. 10 and 12. The cost is $130, plus tax. Classes are held at the Kenai Fine Arts Center in Old Town Kenai.

Farmer's market offers arts, crafts

The area farmer's market is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays through September on the Kenai Spur Highway next to Soldotna Elementary School at the bus turnaround. Fresh vegetables, herbs, plants, arts and crafts are available and new vendors are welcome. For more information, call 262-5463.

Library sponsors contests

The Soldotna Public Library is sponsoring writing and recipe contests, both open to kids ages 7 to 18, in conjunction with its Discover New Trails at Your Library summer reading program. A T-shirt will be awarded to the writing category winner in each of three age categories

Three prizes also will be awarded in the trail mix recipe contest. The deadline for entering both contests is July 14.

Winners will be announced at 2:30 p.m. July 17 at the library. For more information, stop by the library or call 262-4227.

Kids' summer theater camp slated

The fourth annual youth drama camp put on by Nikiski drama, debate and forensics coach Joe Rizzo and the Alaska Children's Institute for the Performing Arts will be held from July 19 to 31 at Nikiski Middle-Senior High School. Kids in first grade through high school may attend. Sessions are from 10 a.m. to noon weekdays. Students will present a play at the end of the camp. The cost is $99.

Watercolor workshop offered

The Peninsula Art Guild will present a five-day workshop for beginning to advanced watercolorists taught by Ken Hosmer from Aug. 2 to 6.
